May 10 – World Migratory Bird Day Community Event

Uncharted Waters Origin
2025.05.10 Saturday 00:00 (UTC + 9)

Enter into the Endless Possibility!

Hello, Admirals.

May 10 marks World Migratory Bird Day, a global observance celebrating the wonder of birds that traverse thousands of miles across continents and oceans.

In honor of this day, Uncharted Waters Origin invites you to explore the skies and participate in a unique discovery event!

🌍 [Event Overview]

Find and post a screenshot of a migratory bird discovery in the [Snapshot Event] on our official website.

We also encourage you to write:

📝 “Which migratory bird discovery is your favorite, and why?”

🌿 Not sure which ones qualify? Here are a few clues:

  1. A tall, elegant bird known for dancing
  2. A rare white species native to North America
  3. A gray-feathered cousin that nests near rivers
  4. A spoon-beaked shorebird with a striking silhouette
  5. A black-headed bird that walks along the tide
  6. A goose that flies between islands and volcanoes

(You may already have discovered them!)

🕊️ Soaring Beyond Borders: A Special Magazine for World Migratory Bird Day

Every May and October, the skies around the world are filled with life.

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) celebrates the incredible journeys of birds that cross continents, oceans, and borders each year — all in the name of survival.

But how much do we really know about these winged travelers?

1. 🌍 What Is World Migratory Bird Day?

First established in 2006 by the UN’s Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and AEWA (Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds),

WMBD promotes awareness about the ecological importance of migratory birds and the global challenges they face.

Each year focuses on a new theme — in 2025, the spotlight is on:

"Protect Insects, Protect Birds"

Because without insects, many migratory birds can’t survive.

2. 🗺️ Great Flyways: The Routes Birds Take

Migratory birds follow specific flyways, vast aerial highways that connect breeding and wintering grounds.

Some of the major flyways include:

  1. East Asian-Australasian Flyway: Korea, Japan, China → Southeast Asia → Australia
  2. African-Eurasian Flyway: Europe → Sahara → Sub-Saharan Africa
  3. Pacific Americas Flyway: Alaska → Western U.S. → Central & South America

These birds rely on wetlands, forests, and coasts as pit stops to feed and rest.

Destroy just one of these sites — and an entire species can be at risk.

3. 🔎 How Do Migratory Birds Survive Long Journeys?

  1. Internal GPS: Birds use the sun, stars, Earth's magnetic field, and landmarks to navigate.
  2. Pre-migration Feasting: Some species double their body weight before flying.
  3. Altitude Shifts: To conserve energy, some birds adjust flight height with temperature and wind conditions.
  4. Wing Power: Their wings are designed for energy efficiency — some birds can glide for hours without flapping!

4. 🏅 Record-Holding Migratory Birds

  1. The Longest Flight: The Bar-tailed Godwit flies 13,000+ km nonstop from Alaska to New Zealand.
  2. The Highest Flyer: The Bar-headed Goose soars over the Himalayas at 7,000m altitude.
  3. The Deepest Diver: The Northern Gannet dives into the ocean from heights of up to 30 meters, chasing fish while migrating.
  4. The Heaviest Migrant: The Whooper Swan migrates despite weighing up to 10 kg!

5. 🧠 Did You Know...?

  1. Migratory birds time their flights with the moon—especially species that travel at night.
  2. Some birds sleep while flying—using one brain hemisphere at a time!
  3. Juvenile birds often migrate before or after adults, guided purely by instinct.

🌿 What Can We Do?

Small actions help preserve migratory routes:

  1. Protect coastal wetlands and forests.
  2. Reduce light pollution (especially during migration seasons).
  3. Support pesticide-free farming to protect insect populations.
  4. Report bird sightings to citizen science databases!

Today, look up and imagine —

Somewhere above, a bird may be flying across an entire ocean…

Driven by instinct, powered by wings, and facing the wild with nothing but feathers and courage. 🕊️

Let us protect the skyways they call home.
