🏛️ What is International Museum Day?
International Museum Day is an annual cultural event established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
Each year on May 18, museums around the world organize exhibitions, lectures, and special programs to highlight their role in preserving memory and celebrating cultural diversity.
📰 [Special Magazine] “A discovery becomes museology when it's recorded.”
1. What is International Museum Day?
On May 18, museums across the globe raise one voice:
“We are not mere storage. We are the keepers of human memory.”
Established by ICOM, this day celebrates museums’ public mission and their role in cultural understanding.
Free admission, special exhibitions, and educational events are just some of the ways museums interact with visitors each year.
🧠 Trivia: As of 2023, there are over 55,000 museums worldwide—most of them small and community-run!
2. What is Museology?
Museology is not just the study of how to display artifacts. It asks deeper questions:
- What should we preserve, and why?
- Who are we exhibiting for?
- How do we pass memories to the future?
It’s an interdisciplinary field—blending humanities, social science, and technology—responsible for the entire journey of objects:
Excavation → Classification → Documentation → Preservation → Exhibition → Education
These “invisible navigators” behind the scenes are museologists.
3. The Origin and Evolution of Museums
The earliest known museum dates back to 6th century BCE Babylon.
Ancient Greece had the Museion, temples for the Muses.
Medieval European monasteries acted as repositories of rare books and artifacts.
The first modern public museum? The Louvre in 1793, opened during the French Revolution.
This inspired the British Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Uffizi Gallery, and others, growing into cultural landmarks of today.
🧠 Trivia: Korea’s first museum was the Korean Imperial Museum founded in 1909,
now continued as the National Museum of Korea.
4. The Age of Exploration: Seeds of Museums
The Age of Exploration brought about a massive flow of new materials:
- Metalwork from Central & South America
- Sculptures from Africa
- Textiles and spices from India
- Ceramics and paintings from Asia
These were collected by royalty, nobles, and scholars in “Cabinets of Curiosity,”
which eventually evolved into modern museums.
While colonial conquest and plunder are part of this history,
today’s museums strive for coexistence and shared heritage rather than ownership.
