discovered the remote island of Saint Helena in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

It was also the Feast Day of Saint Helena in the Catholic calendar,

which is how the island got its name.

To celebrate this historic discovery,

On May 21, 1502, Portuguese navigator João da Nova

discovered a lonely island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

As it happened to be the Feast Day of Saint Helena,

he named the island Saint Helena.

João da Nova played a key role in the early expansion of the India Route after Vasco da Gama,

and his name remains associated with many maritime trade hubs to this day.

Though isolated, Saint Helena was located at the very center of the Atlantic route

between Africa and South America—

and that remoteness turned out to be strategically invaluable.
