May 28 – World Play Day Celebration

Uncharted Waters Origin
2025.05.28 Wednesday 00:00 (UTC + 9)

Enter into the Endless Possibility!

Hello, Admirals.

May 28 is World Play Day, a day to celebrate the power of play—

not just as entertainment, but as a universal right and a key to creativity, especially for children.

Established by the International Toy Library Association (ITLA) and officially proposed during its 8th international conference in Tokyo in 1999,

this day reminds us of the joy and meaning embedded in play.

To mark this occasion, we’d like to share a special story about a unique trade good in our game—

and a gift to accompany it.

📘 Special Magazine – “Kokeshi: A Smile Carved in Wood”

🎎 The Origin of Kokeshi

Kokeshi (木芥子) is a traditional wooden doll that originated in the hot spring towns of Japan’s Tohoku region during the early 1800s.

They were originally sold as souvenirs and children’s toys to visitors,

often handcrafted by artisans during the quiet winter months.

Kokeshi dolls are known for their simple, durable structure,

making them perfect for play, yet their expression and craftsmanship make them a symbol of regional artistry and cultural heritage.

🔍 Aesthetic in Simplicity

Kokeshi come in two main styles:

Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし):

11 distinct types with regional patterns (e.g., Naruko, Hijiori, Tsuchiyu styles).

Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし):

Modern artistic interpretations, often highly collectible.

Their appeal lies in the limbless silhouette, vertical balance,

and most of all, the warm, subtle smile that seems to change with the viewer’s heart.

🌏 More Than Just Toys

Kokeshi dolls have evolved from children’s playthings to recognized folk crafts,

and today they are cherished symbols of “the right to play” in cultural discourse.

They are featured in Japanese festivals, museums, and exhibitions,

and are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
