📮 What is “World Post Day”?

World Post Day was established in 1969 at the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress held in Tokyo, Japan.

The UPU was founded in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland, and has since coordinated and connected postal systems around the world.

This day is observed every year on October 9 to recognize the role of postal services in global communication, trade, and cultural exchange.

2. Meaning

A letter is more than just a piece of paper — it’s a bridge that connects hearts.

Even in our digital age, the post remains a warm symbol of human connection that transcends distance.

Each year, the United Nations and UPU highlight how postal services continue to contribute to society, economy, and cultural solidarity.

3. Did You Know?

Today, more than 190 countries are members of the UPU, maintaining shared international postage systems and standards.

Many countries celebrate this day with open house events at post offices, stamp exhibitions, and letter-writing contests for children.

In 2024, the UPU marked its 150th anniversary, emphasizing once again the enduring “value of connection.”
